TOWAMENCIN – The first cool night of the fall made for perfect football weather for the Knights home opener. That perfect night ended with one of the worst losses in Knight history as Archbishop Wood dominated North Penn 49 – 3. It was the Knights worst loss since a 1952 game against Quakertown.
The Knights got the crowd going early by converting a first down on a fake punt in their own territory. However, the drive eventually stalled and Wood got the ball back scoring on the next play with an 80 yard run around the outside by highly touted Jarrett McClenton.
The speed of the Vikings caused problems for the Knights on both sides of the ball. On offense, the open running lanes quickly closed and open receivers were quickly covered frustrating the offensive effort. The speedy Viking offense led by McClenton was able to run through the Knight defense and Wood freshman Mark Webb was able to out run the Knight’s secondary on a long touchdown pass. Turnovers also plagued the Knights and led to multiple Viking scores.
Bright spots for the Knights included nice runs by Luke Berry and a 35 yard field goal by Matt Ammendola which would have been good from over 45 yards.
With two tough opponents and an 0-2 start, the Knights know things will be no easier next week as they travel to play St. Joe’s Prep on Friday at 7pm.
