TOWAMENCIN – Some people see him around the halls, a lucky few call him coach, and most others know him as Mr. Jones, health and physical education teacher. However, not many know the background or personality of the true Jaimey Jones. The first thing one will notice about Jones is his respect-demanding personality. He can be fun and games at some times, but completely businesslike at others.
Mr. Jones is married and has two daughters ages 5 and 3. He always wanted to coach and he has always enjoyed helping people, even from a young age.
At William Tenant High School, Jones played football in addition to competing in track and field.
“I was only 155 pounds coming out of high school,” he said. “But the one thing I could do was run.”
As a result of his ability to run as well as his hard working persona, Jones was awarded a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh.
While in college, the administration told him that he could be an athletic trainer, but realistically, it was not possible to put in the Lab Hours required as a result of the busy schedule of a college athlete. His next option was to become a math teacher. “Believe it or not, the deal breaker for that career path is that a math teacher is not able to show many videos in class,” joked Mr. Jones. Ultimately, he decided to become a health and physical education teacher.
Though he talked very modestly of his athletic career at the University of Pittsburgh, Jones was extremely successful. He managed to labor through the obstacles of being a football player as well as a track and field athlete. He recalled many times where he would do the entire football practice then immediately after have to complete an entire track workout.
Any athlete will tell you that one practice is difficult, but two in a row takes immense dedication and drive. Being a college athlete taught him time management and dedication, and he was able to travel a great deal. He was able to see many beautiful campuses around the country and even some in Jamaica.
After college, Jones was a football coach at North Penn from 1998 until 2006. He was the coach of the defensive backs and linebackers. He is currently coaching the running backs, full backs, and defensive backs at Pennridge High School.
Jones coached track and field after college as well, spending time coaching at William Tenant H.S for about three years until 2001 when he began to assist Coach Dick Swanker here at North Penn. When Coach Swanker retired, Jones took over as head track and field coach for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
“It’s very humbling and I am honored to be a part of it,” explained Jones. “I try to teach guys how to work hard and the importance of working hard, and then turn them loose.”
Jones feels that as a coach, he becomes a better teacher because he is able to see the importance of self-motivation. He enjoys coaching and teaching because it is a strong passion of his. Although Jones coaches at Pennridge, rest assured that his allegiance is to North Penn. If there was ever a conflict between Pennridge football and North Penn track and field,” he said, “then I would definitely go with North Penn track and field.”
