Okay, this is my final review in our “25 days of books” and I am very excited for this one. I honestly forgot I had read this book, so when I was deciding what book to do I knew it had to be a good one, so I picked this. If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio is the perfect book to finish out my reviews in this series.
I read this a little while ago now but it doesn’t make me love it any less. It’s about a group of theater actors in college, who accidentally kill a man, and still deal with the consequences 10 years later. The whole vibe of the book is very dark-academia and the author quotes Shakespeare many times, but honestly, if you’re a die hard Shakespeare fan and enjoy old theater, I don’t recommend this book. Not that it’s not good, I just think you may see it as too forced or just unnecessary.
But for anyone else who is like me, and could care less about Shakespeare on any given day, this book was great and the quotes the author used from Shakespeare added nice insight rather than being redundant. Now, with all of this being said, it is very possible that you will hate some of the characters. It is nice to read how their friendships form and fall apart at the same time, but at some points you just want to get past the annoying parts.
I can admit that this book did have “boring” parts, but because it was written in play form, it read pretty quickly. I really really loved this book, and if you’re looking for something emotional and inspirational and also dark and morbid, this is for you. So with that, I leave you with my final five-star read this month. Happy reading and happy holidays!
