I am a fiend for books in series. I’ve picked up at least 5 series just this year. One of my favorite series I have ready though is probably the Mara Dyer Trilogy.
When I first picked up The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (#1), I was completely unsure if I’d like the series. But having read all three books now, I can confidently say that it was a great choice.
The series follows 16 year old Mara Dyer. After a tragic accident killing her best friends and leaving only her alive, her family decides to move from Rhode Island down to Miami, Florida, to help Mara move on from the accident.
Now starting at a new school, Mara not only finds herself struggling to make friends, but also she starts noticing paranormal activities happening to her. She is told it is a coincidence but it seems anything but a coincidence.
She manages to make a few friends, two specifically being Noah and Jamie. Throughout the rest of the series we follow them trying to figure out what exactly is happening and why it is happening.
The trilogy is categorized as a plethora of genres. It is a paranormal, thriller, “romantasy”, young adult novel that was first published in 2011.
While I found myself really confused at parts, I thought that the wrap up to the series was honestly jaw dropping. The book starts with a lawyer note explaining that Mara Dyer is just her pseudonym; and though it seems pretty inconsequential, it ends up tying together the trilogy to the last page of the third book, dare I say, impeccably.
The author, Michelle Hodkin, her writing was exciting yet also readable. I didn’t have any trouble getting through her books because, despite the confusing plot, the writing made it a quick and fun read. The mysterious vibes of the book makes it the ultimate fall read.
Overall, I give the whole trilogy 4 out of 5 stars!
Fun Fact: Michelle Hodkins had started a follow-up trilogy that follows Mara’s sidekick, Noah Shaw. While the first two books were published, the third book was never put out, despite being projected to be published in 2021. Now, Michelle Hodkins is seemingly missing from the internet, leaving readers distraught and begging for closure over an unfinished series.
