Betting on You by Lynn Painter was exactly the fluffy romance I needed. After reading a psychological thriller, I was in much need to relax my mind and enjoy something that didn’t force me to stay awake due to paranoia. And this God-sent Y.A. novel answered those prayers.
The book is about Bailey, the main character, who is dealing with the emotional rollercoaster of her parent’s divorce. She eventually meets Charlie, who she decides she hates after being forced to sit next to him on a plane. They eventually meet again a few years later and begrudgingly become friends. Out of this surprising new friendship, a bet is placed. Charlie bets that boys and girls can’t just be friends; Bailey disagrees.
And of course, along the way, they fall in love.
The one thing that I loved about this book was the easy batter between Charlie and Bailey. Their little fights and snide comments towards each other often made me laugh. Their relationship seems so real because of it.
I also love Lynn Painter in general. If you are on Booktok, you know that Painter wrote a tremendously popular book a few years ago: Better than the Movies. If you read that book and loved it as much as me, then I definitely recommend you read Betting on You. There were the same vibes, and it worked wonderfully.
Because the characters in the book were also teenagers in high school, it allowed me to better connect with their emotions and actions. Lynn Painter does a great job at conveying how a teenager might feel, especially with a major change like a divorce.
Overall, I rated this book five stars. It was exactly what I needed when I read it.
