This book has had mixed reviews since it came out; some people hate it and others love it. And I understand why some people dislike it as it can be confusing at parts and can come across as the character only promoting her beliefs. The Witch of Portobello by Paulo Coelho is a story of a woman named Athena, but told from the perspectives of the many people who knew her.
Athena is a mysterious woman, many people claim to know her, and very few really did know her. She is a woman who is free, in her body, in her beliefs, and in everything she does. She is what so many people want to be. And yet there are still people who despise her for everything she does.
Reading this will not change your belief system, it may, but most likely it won’t. You may not agree with her idea to dance and feel the spirituality in your body but I think most people can agree with her views on being your own person. Throughout the novel you see her find who she is, and have the courage to show others who she is regardless of what they have to say against it.
And yes, I can agree that this book can come across strongly in her beliefs, but you can read and appreciate others’ views, without them affecting you. I think this book really is just incredibly written and gives you a clearer sense of purpose. Athena, over and over, reiterates that you can be whoever you want to be, so unlike what some people say, I do not think this book is belief pushing whatsoever.
I gave this five stars because at the time I read it, it was everything I needed to hear. And it may not be the same for you but it is still a very good novel and you will definitely be able to appreciate the writing style of Paulo Coelho. Check it out!
