Since its announcement on October 16th, Chromakopia has been a highly anticipated album for Tyler The Creator fans. For three years, fans have been waiting for a new album from Tyler after his last album, “Call Me if You Get Lost,” was seen by many as his best album yet. When the snip-it of his first song of Chromakopia, “St. Chroma”, got released on YouTube many were skeptical of which direction this album would take. Tyler’s idea of sticking to his unique music style made this album one of his best.
St. Chroma (Ft. Daniel Caesar):
This is a great start to Tyler’s album, allowing him to begin building a theme in this song and throughout the rest of the album, which deals with the idea of light. The beat switches and Tyler’s overall flow on this track make it one of his best opening songs ever.
Rah Tah Tah:
It is different from St. Chroma and is a unique blend of rap and lyrical ideas in the album; it’s nothing like any other song. It is a very good song overall and Tyler focusing on more of a rap type of song worked out very well.
Noid:
I think this song is decent, not my favorite but it’s decent. The pace of the song throws me off a lot because it stays slow the entire time. There were points where I thought the beat was going to switch but it never did so the song was meh.
Darling, I (Ft. Teezo Touchdown):
A very very good song and my second favorite on the album. Teezo’s touchdown as the feature is a great choice because he seems to be able to adapt to many beats, while still having a good flow. The song is both slow and fast and the lyrics along with the beat make it a fantastic song
Hey Jane:
Pretty bad song. It’s not very unique at all, the beat never changes, and the tone doesn’t elevate. The lyrics are fine but the song sounds the same the entire time. Skipping to any part of the song sounds the same. The song is very underwhelming and is overall bad.
I Killed You:
It’s meh. Just meh. I like the unique beat Tyler was going for on this track and the uplifting guitar in the background is something I like. Unfortunately, the song is short and doesn’t evolve on anything Tyler has done so it’s pretty bland. Not a bad song by any means but it is just meh.
Judge Judy:
I’m a big fan of the creative side of this song with many different and unique instruments being used. Other than that the song isn’t very good. Very slow and boring and the song is way too long in my opinion. Kinda sucks the song wasn’t very good because the inspiration is there.
Sticky (Ft. Lil Wayne, Sexyy Red, GloRilla):
As much hate as this song has been getting I enjoy listening to this. A very odd choice for the features on this song but it somehow works. Sexyy Red does a great job on her verse and Lil Wayne is also great as well. The beat is great but the lyrics are interesting. Not the lyrics I would personally pick but the song is good.
Take Your Mask Off (Ft. LaToiya Williams, Daniel Caesar):
I thought I wasn’t going to like this song because of how slow it is but I felt the opposite. The slowness of the song and the lyrics were very good and any of Tyler’s songs with Daniel Caesar is great. It reminds me of a song that would be played when driving late at night and I like that. Great song.
Tomorrow:
Not a fan at all. The song is extremely slow and doesn’t have anything interesting to go along with it. The lyrics are bland and the song is again way too long. Not a fan of the song at all.
Thought I Was Dead (Ft. Santigold, ScHoolboy Q):
This song is the best track in the entire album. ScHoolboy Q also helped produce Collard Greens with Kendrick Lamar and while I don’t like the song the production quality was very good. The song is great, the flow is great, and the beat switch is also fantastic. This is personally my favorite song in the album.
Like Him (Ft. Lola Young):
I’m not too fond of the start of this song but the last minute is very good. The song starts slow and boring but at about 3 minutes the song switches beats and it gets very good. The first part of the song is bad but the last minute and a half is pretty good.
Balloon (Ft. Doechii):
This is one of the worst songs on the album. The feature is horrendous and the “balloon” like beat in the background does not work at all. Doechii does not work well on this track and this is what brings the song down the most.
I Hope You Find Your Way Home:
I like it. It’s not the best song but it’s a good ending to the album. The synth in the background is a great touch and the slowness is a good way to end the album. It is a good end to a long-awaited album by many including myself.
Chromakopia was a top-three album for Tyler The Creator. Igor and Call Me if You Get Lost beat out this album in a few ways. Chromakopia suffers from a lack of a unique style in some songs. Only a few of these songs on a relisten are extremely similar when it comes to their pace. Other than that I think the album’s strengths outweigh its weaknesses making it a very enjoyable listen. Many others believe this is his best album yet and although I don’t agree, you can see that Tyler cares about his audience and makes every album unique. I am extremely excited to see what Tyler releases in the future. Overall, Chromakopia is not his best work but an album that should be praised by new listeners and his lifelong fans.
