You may know Gracie Abrams as the opener for Taylor Swift or the “whisper singer”. But for so many people she is the girl who ignited the bow trend ignited a sense of community through her music.
As Abrams grew as an artist, she was often underestimated due to her father, JJ Abrams, the American filmmaker and composer. But true fans of her see her talent outside of her father’s presence.
Her new album The Secret of Us, released this summer, is described as “more extroverted” than her other albums. Abrams touches on the universal feelings of falling in love and not being someone’s first choice through the 13 songs.
The Secret of Us Tour started its first leg in early September. I had the privilege of seeing Abrams’ tour at The Met in Philadelphia this past Tuesday, October 15th. The show was rescheduled from the week before because Abrams was under the weather which caused her opener Role Model to not perform due to scheduling issues.
The Met has a holding capacity of 3,500 which allows for an intimate and personal concert between Abrams and her fans.
Adorned with bows and yellow, fans lined the door hours before in hopes of getting a close spot in general admission and merchandise. Everyone was trying to get that great picture with The Met sign in the background.
As the lights dimmed and Abrams came onto the stage, the atmosphere within The Met walls was ethereal. Her talent as a performer radiated as she belted and danced around the stage.
Being the last show of her tour, Abrams was filled with sadness and was reminiscing on the whole tour that evening. She sang “Right Now” from her album Good Riddance as a surprise song which reflected her love for being on tour.
“Think I’m more alive, somehow, I feel like myself right now,” Abrams sang.
She also sang “That’s So True” which is on The Secret of Us: Deluxe. This new song was unreleased at the time and was only heard live at her shows. Hearing this song made us all a part of the exclusives that had heard it at the time. The Secret of Us: Deluxe is out now on all listening platforms and includes four new songs and three live.
Abrams bonded all the fans inside The Met. Everyone was so excited to be there and hear their favorite songs live. She is an amazing performer and her energy was high throughout the whole evening. Her happiness radiated into the crowd as she waved to her fans consistently during the show. She commented on posters and even put on a hat that a fan brought for her. It was obvious Abrams loved being on tour, performing, and being with her fans.
I have been a fan of Abrams since 2022 and seeing her grow as an artist has been a privilege. From playing in small venues to opening for Taylor Swift in stadiums, Abrams has come so far and has brought her fans along for the ride.
