TOWAMENCIN – Thrift stores are places where many of us have found ourselves shopping before, whether it’s because we need a low-budget fit, a last-minute shirt for spirit day, or just the right clothing combination on a student salary. Now, thanks in part to Sharing Excess North Penn, our school will be getting its very own thrift store, for a similar, but even larger purpose.
This fall, Sharing Excess North Penn is partnering with the ENACT Club to bring a free thrift shop available to all high school students. “The thrift shop is a shop that collects gently used items that runs during lunches,” club co-president Shrika Hari Krishna said. “[The] goal is to decrease waste, give the items new life, and promote community spirit in a fun way.”
One of the biggest concerns of Sharing Excess is cutting back on wasted items and materials, and they’re emphasizing just that with the thrift store.
“[It] creates a space where we can reduce waste and provide everyone with access to clothing without the burden of cost,” recording secretary Amelia Blore stated. “By exchanging items instead of purchasing new ones, we can help each other while making a positive impact on the environment.”
The sentiment of helping others as well as the planet is shared by everyone in the club.
“We hope it fosters the spirit of sharing and support within our school community…and creates a space where we can reduce waste and provide everyone with clothes,” Krishna said.
Anyone interested in new and free clothes should stop by the store during all lunch periods. The store will be running from September 23rd to September 27th with a back-to-school theme.
Sharing Excess is in its second year at North Penn and looking to grow participation and membership this year. If you are interested in the club or want a way to help out your community in general, you can sign up on Five Star or come to the first meeting of the year on Wednesday, October 2nd in the senior cafeteria from 2:30 to 3:30 after school.
