The North Penn stage is set to be transformed into 15th-century Paris as Theaspieans present the spring musical, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”
Based on Victor Hugo’s timeless novel, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is a tale of love, acceptance, and the human spirit’s triumph over adversity. Set against the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral backdrop, the story follows Quasimodo, the kind-hearted but misunderstood bell-ringer, and Esmeralda, the beautiful gypsy dancer whose compassion knows no bounds. As they navigate the labyrinthine streets of Paris, they encounter betrayal, prejudice, and, ultimately, the power of friendship and love.
“The play admits that it has no real moral and asks, “What makes a monster, and what makes a man?” It leaves this question ambiguous, counting on the audience’s understanding of the play to answer it for them. Despite its dark ending, it also carries a message of hope: that even in the darkest times, hope will always live on,” Alex Goepel, who portrays Claude Frollo, explained.
Quasimodo is a character in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” He is physically deformed and often ostracized or mistreated by society due to his appearance. The musical entertains and provokes an emotional response and encourages viewers to reflect on the treatment of people considered different or marginalized.
“I hope audiences feel genuine emotion from the play and become more sympathetic to the “outcasts” in our society, like Quasimodo,” Goepel stated.
“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” can be viewed at North Penn High School on May 2, 3, and 4 at 7:30 pm and May 5 at 2:00 pm. Get your tickets at npenn.org/theatre!
