2023 was a year that filled with stellar movies. With back-to-back hits like Barbie, Oppenheimer, etc, many were rushing to theatres to watch with anticipation. We may all have favorites, but here are my top five movies from last year. Remember that if you disagree, remember that this is my opinion; we aren’t all the same!
- Spider-Man Across The Spiderverse
As a connoisseur of cartoons, this movie was astonishing from start to finish. Its comic book art style and sleek visuals kept me and other watchers entertained throughout all two hours of the film. The film’s plot was fun yet tragic, leaving on an unexpected cliffhanger. If you are someone who loves Marvel, animation, or simply just Spider-Man, this is a film that I recommend you watch. I promise that you will not be disappointed.
- Saltburn
Saltburn is outrageous and creepy, yet still entertaining. This thriller had many unexpected twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. It went from feeling like a fun teenage movie to a scary, nihilistic one. By the end of the movie, you’ll be shocked, but you won’t be disappointed. The cast, producers, director, and everyone involved in this movie did a stunning job. Although it was good, it isn’t for the faint of heart. Viewer discretion should be advised if you have a weak stomach, or are sensitive to certain situations.
- The Killer
This is another movie that’s outrageous, but still fun. I gasped at almost every scene in the movie. Its grittiness will keep you on the edge of your seat. Without spoiling anything, The Killer lives off of the shock factor it has and every moment is unexpected. If you’re bored and looking for something to watch, then this movie I recommend this movie for you. You won’t be disappointed.
- Barbie
Barbie is a funny, cheerful, witty movie with a deep message behind it. The soundtrack was cute and playful and I enjoyed every bit of it along with the set, visuals, and costumes. Margot Robbie did an excellent job portraying Barbie in a funny yet realistic way, speaking on behalf of many women’s feelings. The main message of the movie is to challenge the norms and expectations that are put on women, but the movie sends this message in a way that everyone can enjoy. I recommend everyone to watch it!
- Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce
If you love true art, then you’ll love this movie. This movie is about her tour “Rennaissance” which is a tour that was loved by all. Her music taps into black culture and the celebration of our people. The costumes, choreographies, sets, and music were all extremely well done. Additionally, she truly makes you emotional with her talents and her singing. The ode to her late uncle and her LGBTQ+ fans is truly the cherry on top; she shows this in her voguing and house music. Beyonce truly never misses with any project that she does, and if you are a big fan of her or simply just a lover of art then this movie is for you!

Nice call putting ATSV at number one! I’m going to watch the others that I haven’t seen, and then come back with my thoughts. Thanks for the recommendations!
