Artist Sophia Choi commits to Boston University
Art has always served as an escape for senior Sophia Choi. Her interest in this craft began as a simple hobby when she was younger but eventually led to her taking art lessons in 5th grade and enrolling in AP art courses in high school.
Choi has taken AP Art for the past two years and received a five on the most recent exam. She also participates in many art competitions outside of school and hopes to continue pursuing art in college. While not majoring in art, she hopes to participate in university art clubs and organizations.
“AP Art; although the course required a lot of work, going to class was like an escape from my other academic classes. I would be able to use my creativity and hands instead of solving problems,” Choi said.
After taking the Psych Honors semester class this year, Choi realized that she wanted to pursue something related to psychology in college.
“I really enjoyed the Psych Honors semester class I took this year. Learning different terms and applying them to how people behave and think is interesting. Although I applied to BU as undecided, this class helped me to realize I want to go into something with psychology,” Choi added.
Aside from school and her art skill, her favorite memories include spending time with family. She has a younger and an older sister; however, she cannot spend as much time with her older sister now that she is attending college.
“When I was younger, my family would sit down together every Sunday and watch a Korean reality show called “Running Man.” We would munch on the snacks my Mom prepared and laugh a lot at the show,” Choi explained.
Choi took her art skill and started a small business selling self-designed stickers, and she also painted a mural for a church. She also works as a dental assistant in a nearby clinic, where she preps rooms, manages appointments, and assists in procedures.
During the summer, Choi enjoys traveling to new places as well as staying at home and doing small tasks such as crocheting and jewelry making. This senior already has her summer planned to unwind and visit places like Miami and Boston.
“I also plan to hang out with friends a lot since I won’t see them as much after we separate and go to college,” Choi added.
The abundance of internships, programs, and diversity attracted Choi to Boston University. She already connected with students from the class of ‘27 at Boston University from Taipei, China, and France.
“Additionally, I love Boston University’s campus. Some of the dorms have the best view overlooking the Charles River. I’m excited to try all the foods and take walks around the campus,” Choi said.
