For Michele Schwartz and Nathan Cho, lifetime of music leads to national stage
TOWAMENCIN – Voices harmonizing. Instruments playing. The ordinary person would describe this as the simple sound of music. For Nathan Cho and Michele Schwartz, however, this is the sound of their passion.
In August of 2022, Cho and Schwartz both qualified for All-Nationals, a 4-day music festival in Maryland. People from all over the country come to this event, rehearsing pieces to be performed on the last day. Being the only two chosen from North Penn, the audition process was highly selective.
“I had a lot going on at the time, and preparing the pieces as well as making sure I was singing to the best of my ability also required a lot of time. Many hours of recording and frustration contributed to the process,” Cho stated.
Auditionists were required to record one specific piece, and had the option to include an additional song of their choice to highlight their strengths. Cho auditioned for singing, while Schwartz did for french horn.
“We weren’t very confident with our recordings when we submitted them. We didn’t think we’d make it, but here we are!” Cho and Schwartz exclaimed.
Both Cho and Schwartz’s musical talents date back to the early days of elementary school, with Cho joining the chorus in 4th grade and Schwartz joining the band.
“I started playing french horn in 3rd grade. I initially wanted to play trumpet but my director put me on horn, and I’m really glad he did because there was no going back once I picked it up,” Schwartz explained.
Cho and Schwartz are both involved in various select groups at North Penn, including chambers and women’s & men’s choir. Schwartz also takes part in wind ensemble and theater. Being involved in music for almost a decade now, the musical journey for these two is just beginning.
