What music does North Penn listen to?

Sammi Stec

A collage of the most popular artists and songs based on a music survey.

Students at North Penn are almost constantly listening to music. We have so many different music tastes, so I decided to do some research to see what North Penn students are really listening to. I opened up a google survey for anyone in North Penn who wanted to let us know what their current favorites are.

Who is your favorite music artist right now?

The most popular music artist of North Penn students currently is Billie Eilish. The 16 year old artist blew up last summer, specifically with one of her most popular songs Ocean Eyes. Some of her other popular songs are Lovely featuring Khalid and most recently When the Party’s Over. She is a young rising artist with a unique style through her music and videos. The two runner ups are AJR and X Ambassadors. Some obvious others are Khalid, Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, and Ariana Grande. There were also some that I have either never listened to or barely know, but I might to have to give Rex Orange County, Maisie Peters, and Ella Mai a listen.

  1. Billie Eilish
  2. AJR
  3. X Ambassadors
  4. Khalid
  5. Ed Sheeran
  6. Post Malone
  7. Ariana Grande
  8. Troye Sivan
  9. A$AP Rocky
  10. Imagine Dragons

What genre do you listen to the most?

Rap and Pop are the most popular by far. These are obvious choices for North Penn students. Although people have different tastes in music, many teenagers love what is high on the charts. Rap has also been extremely popular over the past couple of years, especially at North Penn. Alternative, R&B, and Classic Rock are close behind. Some genres that not a lot of people would think of are Folk, Disco, and Musical Theatre. North Penn students obviously listen to a wide variety of music styles.

Current favorite song?

Here are the top five favorite songs of North Penn currently:

  1. Sunflower (Post Malone)
  2. Happier (Marshmello)
  3. when the party’s over (Billie Eilish)
  4. Close Friends (Lil Baby & Gunna)
  5. Broken Smile (Lil Peep)

This does not speak for everyone, but these are very popular songs right now in general. These next five favorites might not be as familiar.

  1. I Just Want to Be Your Everything (Andy Gibb)
  2. Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears)
  3. No Money (Galantis)
  4. Take It From Me (Jordan Davis)
  5. Put Your Head On My Shoulder (Paul Anka)

Everyone is usually wrapped up in their own music, but it is fun to be able to listen to something new and maybe find a new favorite song or genre.

Current LEAST favorite song?

It was funny to see how students answered this question. Some students could not decide on a least favorite song, while others had a lot to say.

The two top choices are Girls Like You (Maroon 5) and “anything country.” I’m sorry to country music lovers reading this. Here is the list of the current least favorite songs of North Penn (“anything country” and “anything rap” omitted):

  1. Girls Like You (Maroon 5)
  2. Despacito (Luis Fonsi)
  3. I Like It (Cardi B)
  4. Lucid Dreams (Juice WRLD)
  5. If I Was Your Boyfriend (Justin Bieber)
  6. Bad at Love (Halsey)
  7. Never Be the Same (Camila Cabello)
  8. Let It Fly (Lil Wayne)
  9. No Brainer (DJ Khaled)
  10. Barbie Dreams (Nicki Minaj)

How do you listen to music?

Lastly, I asked what students use to listen to music. Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, SoundCloud, or other. Around 58% of students said they use Spotify, about 27% said Apple Music, 10% are Pandora users, and the other 5% was split up between SoundCloud, Youtube, and the radio.

Overall, this was a very interesting set of results and not what I was expecting. North Penn students listen to so many different genres, artists, and songs that are unique to themselves and who they are. This survey obviously does not cover the entire student population, so comment below your own favorite song or artist! I hope this encourages students to listen to some new music that you haven’t before.
