Throwback Thursday: A look back at NPHS on stage
April 30, 2015
The NPHS Theatre Department has always been a big part of North Penn. It offers not only students the chance to perform, but also offers the community a good show.
With the spring musical, Titantic, the Musical, opening tonight, in this edition of Throwback Thursday, we take a look at one of the fine plays the theatre department staged in 1970, “Sandbox” written by Edward Albee.
“Sandbox” is a fifteen minute, one act play with only four characters and two musicians. Its plot involves a mom and a dad taking care of their grandmother. Throughout the play, the cast directly addresses the audience, making them feel like they themselves are a part of the show.
This play was one of the two productions put on by the theatre department in 1970 with the other being “Lovers” written by Brian Friel. Both of these short plays were produced by longtime North Penn theater director and teacher Cynthia Louden. Andrea Roney is the current North Penn thater director.

Since 1970, the theatre department has most definitely come a long way. The program itself has grown tremendously with over 100 students on stage and in the pit band. As a result of the growth, the shows have become much more elaborate, at times almost like a Broadway production.
Recently, from The Music Man in 2012 to Aida in 2013 to Beauty and the Beast in 2014, the thespians always seem to enthrall audiences with outstanding performances.
The department is sure to blow away audiences with their latest rendition, Titanic: The Musical. The show is set to take stage Thursday, April 30th – Saturday, May 2nd at 7pm and Sunday, May 3rd at 2pm.
