Although the annual fall play isn’t for another two months, preparations have already begun for North Penn Theatre’s production of Once in a Lifetime. Taking place in a Hollywood studio during the transition from silent films to talkies, the light and playful comedy is sure to be a huge hit for everyone in the North Penn community.
Because North Penn Theatre has put on more serious and romantic shows in the past, the play’s producer and co-director, Andrea Roney, explains her reasoning as to why she chose to do a play with a more blissful mood.
“There are many worrisome events and issues going on right now in our community, our nation, and our world. I think we all need to laugh…laughter is healing. Once in a Lifetime seemed the best script for our current company and for producing the technical aspects like sets, costumes, lights, etc.”
With the influx of new students from the middle schools interested in the theatre department, Roney had an additional factor to consider when deciding which play to stage. “We have a large sophomore class that is joining the veterans. They have energy, talent, enthusiasm, and passion – a great mix!”
Stephen Sokolowski, junior and second year member of North Penn Theatre and Thespians, talks about his favorite part of being in this group of people. “I love getting to see all the friends again that I made in previous plays. And putting the play on itself is always fun!”
The talent this year, says Roney, is fantastic. “We have some terrific returning juniors and seniors in all areas of performing and technical theatre. It’s always a fulfilling experience to watch them grow each year and find their voices in theatre in whatever area they choose to work.”
The whole crew will also be taking the production to the PA State Thespian Conference two weekends after it plays at North Penn. This means that the the set, lights, sound, props, and costumes have to be designed while keeping in mind that the whole show must be transferable to a totally different stage. “Producing the play at the PA State Thespian Conference is also great because the theme of this year’s Conference is “A Roaring Good Time” with a bow toward the theatre of the 1920s,” says Roney. “So, our production set in 1927 will be very timely – pun intended!”
With a flourishing reputation, the shows that the North Penn Thespians produces are always a huge success with audiences in their own theatre and beyond. The curtains open for Once in a Lifetime at 7:30 PM on November 20th, which shows on the 21st and 22nd and concludes with a 2 PM matinee on the 23rd. This play is sure to be a hilarious event fit for all ages to enjoy and certainly one not to miss.
