Ever wished you could read that book in under a day? Or finish reading all of your emails instantly? Well I have some good news for you- there’s an app for that.
Move over e-Readers: a new way to read is quickly approaching, and it has the potential to change the way we read forever. It’s called Spritz, and it claims to have the ability to increase your reading speed from an average of 220 words per minute to up to 1,000 words per minute. For the students who dread having to read thirty pages of a novel per night for English class, this new app is a savior.
But how does it work? The app takes away the time that it takes to move your eyes across the page and scanning for the next optimal recognition point (ORP), which actually is about 80 percent of the time reading, where the other 20 percent is the time used to actually read and understand the words. But Spritz takes away that 80 percent of searching time by giving you one word at a time and highlighting the ORP.
The slowest speed is 250 words per minute, and after some practice you can train yourself to read 600 words per minute, then if you’re really good, you can get up to 1,000 words per minute and read novels such as War and Peace in ten hours, or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in just 77 minutes.
The creators of the app say that their creation could free up a lot of time in people’s lives just by using it to read emails or news stories. And of course, you could go through the entirety of your summer reading list in just a few days.
Currently, the app is set to come preinstalled on new Samsung devices, and it is available to test out on their website www.sprintzinc.com. There isn’t any set date for the app to become available to iPhones or Androids as of now, but the creators say that they are in negotiations to make their app accessible to a more widely spread audience.
This app could be a flop, or it could be a revolution in reading- we’ll just have to wait and see. Meanwhile, everyone has to continue reading their books at normal speed. Sigh.
