Receiving poor reviews across varying internet movie review sites, Son of God has sparked much controversy for a variety of reasons: biblical inaccuracies, the director’s creative license, lack of entertainment value, and more. The movie, as expected, explores the life of Jesus from His birth to resurrection. If you were raised anywhere near a Bible, there is a good chance you will recognize many of the scenes, as the movie only depicts Jesus’s classic teachings and miracles. But it’s tough to complain about a lack of suspense because even the most talented director would have trouble documenting the entire life of debatably the most significant individual in human history. The family oriented motion picture does have some minor biblical inaccuracies, but when asked about them, producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett said, “We’re not pastors and we’re not qualified to teach. What we’re qualified to do is make an emotional connection.” Working on the script with over 40 scholars and theologians, Downey and Burnett claimed that although the script fails to be word for word with the Bible, the meaning of each teaching does remain accurate. If you’re at all interested in seeing the film, don’t let the mediocre scores of 5.5/10 on IMDb.com and a 4.7/10 on rottentomatoes.com dissuade you from taking a trip to the theater. It is powerful in its purpose, which is to characterize Jesus and express his teachings, but it does not measure up to its counterpart The Passion of the Christ.
