With such a plentiful amount of different cultural backgrounds in the school, it’s no wonder students find themselves highly interested in other countries and cultures. To satisfy this desire, North Penn’s Model UN Club hosted a celebration of world cultures Thursday after school.
Cultural clubs such as the International Friendship Club, French Club, SALSA Club, Chinese Cultural Club, Italian Club, and Korean Club participated by setting up stations with posters, information on the club and the country it represents, and lots of food.
After students were given time to look at all of the clubs’ presentations, get some food, and talk with the other attendees, the six exchange students came up to talk about their home countries and answer questions from the audience that ranged from what their favorite foods were to what people in Europe think about Americans.
When the informative and hilarious Q&A session ended, the Korean Club came up and performed their breakdancing routine, followed by Danielle Suan’s performance of a traditional Columbian dance- 10 pound dress and all-, and the event concluded with the Chinese Cultural Club performing a modern twist on the traditional Chinese Fan Dance.
“All of the dances were really good! I thought I would just stop into the meeting and check it out real quick, but it’s actually really fun, so I ended up staying for a lot longer than I expected, and I’m glad I did,” junior Connie Lee remarked.
Everyone at the event seemed to be enjoying themselves, often remarking about how they loved all of the food and how cool all of the presentations were. French teacher and French Club advisor Anya Assous was one of the many people who were really impressed by the whole event.
“It’s actually really cool! I’m delighted by the turnout. It shows that North Penn not only has a diverse population, but also students that are interested in other ways of life. I find it very refreshing! It’s a great way for clubs to get together and celebrate. I do hope they continue this in future.”
The direct mixing and mingling of cultures was a fun way to recognize and appreciate the sheer amount of diversity present in North Penn that makes it so colorful and lively, and this multicultural meeting is sure to be a hit every year, just as it was this year.
