In 1993 two French musicians attended a rave. While this may sound like the start of a poor joke, fast forward 20 years and those two musicians, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, are the duo known as Daft Punk, the igniters of the wild-fire known as house music. After two decades and four studio albums, Daft Punk has become one of the most influential electronic/dance music artist with popular artist such as Skrillex and Kanye West citing them as a source of inspiration.
After 2010, there wasn’t much more the powerhouse duo could accomplish. They were coming off a sold-out world tour that was followed by scoring one of Disney’s most anticipated films, Tron: Legacy. So 3 years later we are still new-Daft-Punk-less. But the end is in sight.
On March 2nd, during an episode of Saturday Night Live, Daft Punk released a 15 second long commercial showing the infamous helmets fusing together. After this mysterious teaser, the internet sparked into controversy, thirsty for any info concerning the potential of a new album. Finally three weeks later on March 23rd, the duo finally answered to the beck and call with a new TV spot, iTunes pre order, and the album cover/name Random Access Memories.
Since then it has been announced that Daft Punk collaborated with Giorgio Moroder and Todd Edwards. Both showed their excitement, anticipation and utmost respect for the upcoming album with Edwards stating, “When the music becomes focused on the effects that are being used or the presets of sounds it’s just computer, there’s no soul there. It’s kind of ironic, two androids are bringing soul back to music.”
Look for Daft Punk’s new album Random Access Memories to drop on May 21st, with a pre-order available now on iTunes for $11.99.
