Most know Mr. Misuro from his short stature, flower child pony tail, and quirky, yet effective, teaching techniques. But who is the man behind the beard? Misuro is a person who is not afraid to break the stereotypical masculine norm and attend a symphony or ballet, or have a 6 foot 2’ wife.
Misuro and his wife Sarah dated 10 years before they were married about a year ago. She is the love of his life, and he makes sure everyone in the greater Philadelphia area knows it. Whenever Misuro spots wet pavement he makes sure to sketch their initials SM2 inside a heart for his wife to find, he has done this over 100 times. Often on these quests for wet concrete Misuro will bring along his best friend in crime, his deaf pit bull whose name this week is Bryan. The Misuros change their dog’s name every week; because well… he can’t hear them, some of his old names have been Adicus and Stinky.
When Misuro is not out walking (not running; he claims he “has not run in 10 years”), he loves to garden. He is proud that the place where he grows his vegetables was once a toxic spot where a building once collapsed on itself, but Misuro remediated it himself. He also loves to rock climb in very interesting spots. The Red is one of his favorite places to climb, which is a 300 foot cliff with a hole in the wall that Misuro has slept in. But his favorite place is Rumney, a climbing spot near a commune that he stays at to “help out the hippies” by picking fruit and cleaning in exchange for really good food.
When Misuro was 18 he was sitting around a campfire with his buddies and the timeless question came up, “what if we just got up and went around the country in a car?” And two weeks later- they did that very thing. With only what they could scavenger in that short amount of time, Misuro and 4 other guys packed into a car for 3 months with no money and did odd jobs to earn food. They all grew extremely close and those friends were the groomsmen at his wedding. According to Misuro, the experience was a life changing time and “everyone should have that experience.”
After high school, Misuro went to LaSalle, and his first night at LaSalle was his first night in Philly and he didn’t leave. Misuro is a true Philly man through and through; on the weekends he goes into the city to help out at a homeless shelter, Covent House, for young adults, to clean the kitchen and give out food. He is currently working with LaSalle to get sponsorships every other year. Misuro had such a great experience at LaSalle he believes everyone should have an opportunity to attend. After college Misuro had many jobs before working at North Penn some include: janitor, army civilian researcher, science geek camp counselor, bus boy, and vet technician.
Now that you know the man behind the beard and ponytail, you’re probably wondering why does he have a beard and ponytail? It all started when his high school sweetheart, who hated what he looked like with long hair and a beard, broke his heart. So in order to spite her, Misuro continued to not shave or get a haircut. Secondly- because of Misuro’s small stature he thought he would look like rather boyish and no one would take him seriously if he did shave. And third- most men in his family lose their hair when they begin to age, so Misuro wants to delay that event as long as possible.
In the future Misuro dreams to win the lottery, wants to apprentice for a butcher in order to “learn how to butcher” this summer, and to see a bald eagle ASAP.
