As prom season rolls around, junior Rebecca Rosenblatt’s name can be heard all around the halls as she is quickly becoming North Penn’s master of all things hairstyling.
“I started around 8th grade, but that was only with my hair,” explained Rosenblatt. “I didn’t start doing others people’s hair until the end of 9th grade. I guess at first I just enjoyed doing it and that was all there was to it, and then, once I learned more complicated braids and styles, I would get more and more excited to figure out how to do a hairstyle that I had seen in a picture or on someone at school.”
Becca’s first styles were simple French braids, as her skill and experience increased, so did the hairstyles’ complexity.
“I get my hair inspiration from so many places, pictures online, YouTube tutorials, instagram, styles I see in person, movies – whenever I see fancy, done-up styles in the movies I get excited and want to recreate it.”
While most people are able to either braid or do hairstyles better on themselves or others depending on what style it is, Rosenblatt admits that she is “better at braiding and styling another person’s hair; it’s just easier because I can see what I’m doing better and my arms don’t hurt as much when I do not have to keep reaching back.”
Becca has done many types of braids including French, Dutch, fishtail, carousel, waterfall, twists, headband, and four-strand braids. “I’ve done a lot of updos as well, that include a rose bun, seashell bun (fishtailed bun), and what I call a ballerina braid.” She can also make bows three different ways and can curl hair using one of three different heatless methods.
If you are curious to see what Becca’s hair styles look like check out her 52 Weeks of Hair album on her Facebook page where she posts a hairstyle for each week of the year. You can also check out her instagram (@beccarose71) for styles already in her album or for styles that she is working on. Additionally, Becca plans on creating a YouTube channel dedicated to fashion and lifestyle showcasing tutorials of different hair styles.8)
Becca’s best advice for beginners is to learn how to french braid because “It’s the basis for every hairstyle you do; practice frequently, it’s the only way you can get good; and watch YouTube tutorials, it helps so much when you’re stuck or want to learn something new.”
“I’d love to continue hairstyling in the future, not as my career focus but as a casual side option. But now for prom, I already have a ton of appointments lined up, especially for senior prom,” laughing, “I’m going to need to time my day to make sure it all gets done! I did prom styles last year and I’ve done some fancy events this year already. I did Katie Marino’s hair for homecoming and several other people for the military ball.”
When she’s not styling hair, Becca is involved in many activities here at North Penn including theater, Thespian Troupe, NHS, Key Club, and NPTV, and evens plays soccer outside of school. Becca has a younger brother and a younger sister, and when asked if her sister enjoys having her hair done, she explained to me that “she actually doesn’t, but then she just doesn’t like people touching her hair, but for special events she will ask me to do her hair.”
“If anybody has a special event in which they need to get their hair done,” said Rosenblatt, “they can message me on Facebook or email me at [email protected] I’d love to keep branching out with the people I style.”
