After graduating from North Penn in 2011, Spencer Hill headed straight for New York–and straight for an artistic scene he could only describe as “fantastic.”
According to Hill: “The art scene [in New York] is really easy to get into. There are so many galleries to go to.”
A freshman at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, Hill’s schedule is currently full of fine arts foundation classes though his later plans include a major in Graphic Design.
His decision to head into the Graphic Design field was cemented after he attended a summer arts program at the Maryland Institute College of Art–otherwise known as MICA–in Baltimore, Maryland.
When asked, Hill describes his style as very minimalist. “Simple is hard,” he says, and his work reflects a constant fight to communicate a message that everyone can understand. “Life is not simple. That’s why we have artists. It’s my job to make it simple.”
Hill garners much of his inspiration from Massimo Vignelli–an artist who frequently visits Pratt Institute. A self-proclaimed “typography nerd,” Hill–like Vignelli–is a firm believer in minimal type fonts. A firm defender of Helvetica, Hill claims Papyrus as the type he dislikes most strongly.
Hill is also a fan of surreal artist Rene Magritte.
Hill has ambitious goals for the future. He has already emailed graphic design firms for possible internships and he plans on going gallery hunting with friends after winter break is over.
As Hill says, “I am surrounded by art, therefore art must be my passion.”
