Among artists, there is always that one prodigy that no matter what medium he or she uses, he or she will always excel in it and create a beautiful masterpiece that will leave you speechless. That artist, among the Class of 2014 artists, is Emily Urban.
Emily has been involved in the arts ever since she can remember. As a child, she enjoyed drawing everything around her. “I have been coloring in coloring books since I was little and I’ve been taking art classes as I grew up,” said Emily about how art has been prominent throughout her life. Also, she added, “I grew to love it. Ever since I was little, I would just look at things and draw them. I was inclined to do it. Something didn’t inspire me. I just kind of loved it from the start”. However, over the years, she has become more passionate about having people as the subject matter of her paintings and drawings, which is certainly reflected in the many artworks she has created so far.
Her graphite self-portrait, a drawing displayed this year at North Penn’s Annual Art Show, is the epitome of her love for portraits, as well as her advanced craftsmanship. Her controlled hatch marks and the accuracy of the portrait itself illustrate the talent of this outstanding artist (see picture below).
In addition, she expressed her love for Impressionism and the artists from this art movement, like Cezanne and Monet, since, “in elementary and middle school, [she] had done projects on impressionism,” which further helped her learn more about the meaning and purpose behind impressionist artworks. Likewise, she hopes to acquire more knowledge about other art movements from various artists by taking AP Art History next year. That way, she will be able to imbue herself in other artistic styles and find the characteristics from particular movements that she would like to incorporate in future artworks.
Emily also added that she is beginning to experiment with other media which hopefully will help her become more skilled as an artist. “I’ve always liked graphite, just drawing, but I’m trying to expand my horizon and do more oil painting and watercolor because I don’t do painting as much so I’ve just started to do it more this year,” said the artist. Furthermore, she pointed out that “[she] has tried to be just controlled and realistic, but lately [she] is trying out new styles that are more suggestive”.
When asked about her future plans for college, she replied, “I’ve thought about it and I definitely want to go to a college with a really amazing art program, but I’m not sure if I want to go to just an art school because I love other subjects too”. She added that, besides art, French is another subject she feels very passionate about.
With such talent, will to learn more about art, and determination to become better, Emily Urban is destined to succeed in the art world. All of her artwork exceeds the maximum levels of craftsmanship and creativity, which further exemplify her hard work and her talent in art.
