Say ann-yeong-haseyo to the Korean Club. Bringing its own oriental spice and flavor to North Penn, the club is led by math teacher, Mr. Jonathan Rho.
“Korean Club is basically a club that welcomes everyone; you don’t have to be Korean to join. We basically learn about the Korean culture and we do activities together and watch movies. We learn and bond a lot together as a whole and of course have fun together” explained Secretary Nicole Hwang
President Christine Park also added “its fun! I love Korean club, who doesn’t and it’s a great experience. Korean club is a club that gathers people who want to learn more about the Korean culture.”
Many of members can agree that the Korean Club is like a safe haven and they can get away from the North Penn atmosphere and escape to somewhere close to their homeland.
“Korean club is where Koreans gather around and meet other Koreans, “fobs” talk to each other, and it’s a great time. We watch movies and plan picnics and have Korean barbeques. It’s definitely something I look forward to in my day and hanging out with my friends at the Korean Clubhouse” said fellow member Kenny Shin.
By ninth period, Room E138 truly does turn into a Korean Clubhouse. With KPOP music playing and members break dancing, you cannot help but feel as though you are in Korea.
Historian Anthony Le said “Korean club is way to make the Korean people transfer to America to feel more comfortable. So what we’re doing is learning the Korean culture and at the same time adapting to the American culture.”
“It’s tough…I mean look at them” Mr. Rho joked on being the advisor of Korean Club. “Korean club is where all the cool kids come to hang out. And only cool people are interested in the Korean culture… It’s fun, and because I have Korean heritage in me I guess I can help them understand their heritage better. And I was quite surprised that other groups of people have interests in joining Korean Club so that was surprising.”
