With a little over a week left before the first day of December, there is still time to purchase a traditional German Advent Calendar from the German Club.
Advent Calendars, which began showing up in Germany as early as the beginning of the 19th century, help count down the days until the Christmas holiday. Each day, from December 1 to December 24, a small door on the colorful Advent Calendar opens and a chocolate is revealed.
“The sale is running until December 2. Each calendar costs five dollars and they are imported from Germany,” says Devin McCoy of the German Club. “The chocolate is delicious and they make great gifts for family and friends, especially children.
German Club is also still welcoming new members, and according to McCoy, anyone can join.
“German Club is a cultural club, so you don’t have to know a lick of German to be in the club–we have officers who take French, or took Spanish–just having an appreciation for another culture is all that matters,” McCoy says. “Some of our most popular events are our trip to Christkindlmarkt, making gingerbread houses, and the annual Franco-German soccer tournament.”
