This Friday night, 7 pm, Broadway Cares is set to light up the stage with an unforgettable event, Knight in the Spotlight, taking place at North Penn High School. As the weekend rolls in, theatre lovers and supporters will come together to celebrate the incredible work that BC does in support of those affected by HIV/AIDS. To North Penn Thespian Troupe, it’s more than just a night of performances, it’s an impactful and powerful demonstration of how art and theater can make a difference in the world.
Since 1999, North Penn has raised over $112,000 for Broadway Cares. Senior co-coordinators Laynie Drolet, Jack Zagowski, and Amelia Zanine believe in the importance of Broadway Cares and this Showcase.
“It used to be called Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS was an organization mainly focused on raising money for people with AIDS during the HIV/AIDS crisis. But now, they have actually expanded and they raise money and fund grants across the nation, they help provide food to families and healthcare all around, and now they are connected to EDTA which helps support getting theater education into more schools around the country,” Zanine shared.
“Here at North Penn, we support Broadway Cares every year with an annual gala or showcase, with a bunch of student performances from North Penn, from North Penn Theater, and all three middle schools and their spring musicals. So it’s a night that raises money via donations and a silent auction,” Drolet explained.
This isn’t just a little performance from North Penn, this showcase has a major moment for all that are in involved.
“The North Penn Thespian Troupe actually was the first high school in the nation to do one of these galas,” Zagwoski said. “One person from North Penn reached out to other schools locally and nationally to get other schools to do a gala.”
Enjoy performances from the Comprehensive Music Technology class, NPHS music and theatre performances, sneak previews of all three middle school musicals, and an exclusive preview of NPHS Theatre’s musical, Children of Eden. The signed Broadway souvenir auction starts at 7 pm. Cash, credit card, and Venmo transactions are accepted.
North Penn has raised $110,000 so far and the goal is to go above and beyond $115,000. Come on out Friday night, 7 pm, compete in a silent auction with your friends, and dress however you want!
