Knight’s Next Quest: Riley Shields

Knight’s Next Quest: Riley Shields

Where did you apply to college?

I actually only applied to one school, and that was Penn State. In hindsight, I probably should’ve played it safe and explored other options, but everything ended up working out! I never really imagined myself anywhere but PSU, although I do occasionally think about the “what ifs.”

Where did you commit to and why?

I committed to Penn State in November! I grew up in a Penn State family- both of my parents went there, so that definitely influenced me to a certain extent. I spent a lot of time visiting friends in the State College area and exploring the campus when I was younger, and familiarity was a big factor for me. I look forward to experiencing it from the perspective of a student!

What are your academic/career aspirations?

I’m majoring in English education and I hope to teach at the secondary level. I’ve always had an appreciation for literature, and a teaching career provides me with the opportunity to inspire a love of reading and writing in others while continuing to expand upon my own. I also hope to be the type of educator who helps each student find their voice, as many of my teachers have helped me to do over the years. In addition to teaching, I hope to stay somewhat involved in a theatre program of some kind, whether it be by performing or contributing behind the scenes.

What are you most excited about next year?

I’m excited to form connections with new people and take classes that will further prepare me for my future career.

What’s your favorite North Penn memory?

I really enjoyed traveling to Columbia University’s journalism conference with my friends from the Accolade staff!
