North Penn high school is known for its outstanding extracurricular. From its championship winning sports teams to its talented arts programs, it’s no doubt that the students of North Penn dedicate their three years at the school to making it a more inclusive and accomplished school. But what exactly goes on behind the scenes of some of these activities?
For Cece Ahart, a North Penn senior, these activities have defined her high school experience. As a member of both the theater and marching band, Ahart has gained first hand experience of the hard work and collaboration that is needed to make each performance special.
“In theater I am the stage right stage manager, so I help build the set and run the show from my side of the stage,” explained Ahart. “During performances I have a headset on and communicate the calls from the production booth to the people on my side.”
Theater rehearsals at North Penn are largely student-led, which provides opportunities for students to take ownership of their production process. Ahart describes a typical day during “build time”, which focuses on set construction and preparation for the rehearsal.
“I would go to the auditorium around 3 and we would build the sets until 6,” said Ahart. “That time is mostly student run so as a leader I would try to help delegate different tasks to people who could get it done, and do it safely. Then once we’re finished me and the other stage managers will eat dinner while the cast starts to warm up for their rehearsal. During their rehearsal we follow along in the script to help with lines and talk about how the cast’s needs will work with the set that’s being built. We note changes for the next crew meeting and usually wrap up around 9.”
Ahart’s role in the Marching Knights is just as demanding, blending preparation with support for her fellow band members.
“In the marching knights we show up 30 minutes early to get ready for rehearsal,” said Ahart. “During that time we set up our instruments and go over drill/music before going on the field. I like to check in with my section to see how they are doing, if they’re stressed out it’s not going to be an easy rehearsal for them.”
Ahart’s leadership in both band and theater emphasize the importance of communication, as she ensures her peers feel supported while they perform what they love.
One thing Ahart wishes people understood is how much work in theater and band happens behind the scenes.
“I don’t think people realize how much of it is student run/led. We use saws and drills and all kinds of power tools, and we build the set ourselves. The adults are there to help when we need it,” explained Ahart.
Her favorite memory describes the fulfillment of all the collaboration of efforts from members.
“After we finished our performance of ‘When I Wish’ at MetLife (nationals) I was so happy. It was very satisfying to be done and to have put my best show out there on the field,” shared Ahart.
Theater and band at North Penn are more then just extracurricular- they’re strong communities built on collaboration and communication. Thanks to the students like Cece Ahart, the talent of these programs continue to grow and thrive, both on stage and on the field.
