North Penn High School’s Environmental Action club (ENACT) is once again raising awareness about protecting our environment, this time through the relaunch of its student-run newsletter, the “Green Gazette”. The newsletter, which focuses on local and global issues, is gearing up for another year of Eco-tips and insightful articles.
“The Green Gazette is a student-run newsletter. It’s run by leaders from the ENACT club and also just members,” Green Gazette editor, Simar Kler, explained. “We have a writing team and a graphic design team and we put together monthly issues about local and global environmental topics, and also Eco-tips.”
The Gazette encourages contributions from students who are interested in the environment, offering them an opportunity to share their ideas without a strict monthly commitment.
“We publish once a month, usually at the beginning of each month. This month we’ve been working on our November issue, which we’ll publish on November 1st. If you want to be a writer, you don’t have to sign up and do it every single month. It’s a very informal thing. Our writing teams can basically pick their topics and pitch it,” Kler commented.
The Green Gazette consists of two roles- writer and graphic designer. Writers brainstorm and pitch article ideas, while graphic designers are in charge of the newsletter’s visual features.
“At graphic design, we have a spreadsheet that has every article and the person that wrote it. [Graphic designers] will go in, write their name down, for whichever article that they would like to design for,” shared graphic designer, Leyna Andrews. “It’s really a good creative outlet. It’s really fun, and also not really a huge commitment. It’s not like you sign up at the beginning of the year and then have to strictly do one article per month, you really just do as you have time to do. ”
The Green Gazette covers a wide range of topics, from current events to Eco-tips.
“There’s really no set minimum or set maximum [of words], because it’s our newsletter so we can format it however we want. There is also ‘Eco-Tips’ which can be like recipes. One I did last year was ‘What to do with your pumpkins after you carve them’, or sustainable holiday decorations. You can write about basically anything,” Kler added.
“We try to have a positive light, and write about the good things that are happening so people have faith.”
The Green Gazette isn’t the only project ENACT currently has lined up. The Fall Electronics recycling drive is coming up on November 9th. This event allows community members to safely dispose of their old electronics.
“The Electronics recycling drive is with ACT recycling, it’s all your old electronics, anyone in the community can drive up, it’s just a drive through, so you come up with your car and students will unload the old stuff from your car,” Andrews Stated. “We sort all of the items into the boxes and ACT takes them away and recycles them.”
With the Green Gazette promoting environmental awareness and the electronics drive solving a common community challenge, the ENACT club is dedicated to raising awareness and making a positive impact on the community.
