A showcase of culture, pride, and celebration — North Penn High School’s largest student-held event returns this spring on March 1st at 6:30 – the second annual Multicultural Night.
Multicultural Night, North Penn’s newest tradition, showcases the diverse cultural clubs through performances, food, and activities. A night full of various cultures is showcased through the hard work of North Penn’s students.
2023 was the first year that Multicultural was held by a committee of students with the help of advisors Mr. Mosttert and Mr. Evans. The event included performances held in a crowded audience, prompting the team to expand their resources this year. It also included various foods from around the world and activities like henna and coloring for children.
“Last year was the pilot year, we were very nervous about the outcome, but everyone who came to the show loved it.” Director Yordanos Lemma said. “This year we have so many clubs that are involved, German, French, and Filipino, [leading to] more student involvement. And this year we are hosting it in the auditorium and estimating around 600 people, nearly triple than last year.”
Leading up to the event, students put many hours into the event throughout all 3 fragments of the show. Multicultural has over 20 performances this year, almost double last year. The event will also have expanded activities and food.
“The diversity of the food this year is something incredible, it ranges from East Africa to Southeast Asia to the heart of Louisiana and Black America. So much more diversity than last year.” Lemma stated.
Cultural club’s individual events like ICA’s Republic Night and AAAC’s To Whom It May Concern Black History Showcase have proven very successful for the respective clubs, but an event like Multicultural is an opportunity for people who tend not to divert from their culture to experience and educate themselves about other cultures. The profit from Multicultural goes entirely back to the reinvestment of the cultural clubs at North Penn.
North Penn’s Multicultural Night also holds a specific achievement as one of the only schools in the county that hosts a student-led event of size like this.
“I think it is great [that administration] is helping us out, both the other 2 school districts I’ve visited in the county have never had an opportunity to create something of this scale, and we are very fortunate for what we have here.” President Vincent Nyguen said.
Multicultural Night is on Friday, March 1st, 2024 at 6:30 at North Penn High School. Multicultural Spirit Day is also on Friday, so make sure to wear your cultural attire and visit @npmulticultural on Instagram for more information.
“I think it is so interesting that you can walk around and see so much. If you aren’t coming for the performances, or not interested in Multicultural, if you are a big foodie or love eating please come out just for that!” Lemma exclaimed.
