These events are ranked in significance to the North Penn student body and culture.
1. NP Softball going 28-0 and winning state championship, Gatorade Player of the Year Julia Shearer
- For a third straight year, a North Penn pitcher has been named Gatorade’s Softball Player of the Year. Julia Shearer for a second year in a row received this honor at the end of the 2022-23 season which saw North Penn Softball go undefeated and win the state championship, cementing that roster’s legacy as one of the best sports team in North Penn’s history. Shearer is now a pitcher/outfielder at the University of Maryland.
2. North Penn Reimagined
- After nearly a half-decade of discussion, two options have been proposed for a reimagined North Penn High School. Option one costs $403M and requires a yes vote in the voter referendum, this option would integrate ninth grade into the high school and see a modernized renovation of the building. Option two costs $236M and is only focused on essential infrastructure repairs. The taxpayers decided out of these two options for the district in a special election on January 16th, 2024. 3. NP implements no-zero policy
- North Penn officially implemented a no-zero policy effective this school year. Anything aside from Cumulative tasks (tests/quizzes) has a grade floor of 50%, this is designed to assist students in climbing out of a hole they may be in of low grades. A zero hurts one’s grade, while a fifty wouldn’t hurt as bad. This controversial policy could either positively affect poor-performing students or become a fallback option for unmotivated students.
4. Rakibul half-court shot for a free trip to Disney
- The senior class’s homecoming pep rally included a half-court shot contest for the first time in four years. This year, the winner gets a free trip to Disney and senior Rakibul Hoque’s shot earned him a free senior trip. The energy in that room when the shot sunk in,
5. Death of James H. Finnemeyer
- On April 20, 2023, Mr. H. James Finnemeyer’s passing saddened the North Penn community. For 35 years, Finnemeyer was a teacher in the history department and also had various other roles at North Penn: serving as the activities director, executive director of the PASC, and SGA advisor, creating North Penn’s Mock Convention, and hosting National Student Council Conference in 2005. Through these many roles, Finnemeyer’s legacy forever stands in the hearts and minds of thousands in the North Penn community. 6. NP Water Polo won both state championships
- Both of North Penn’s boys and girls Water Polo teams get revenge on the rival Wilson Bulldogs as both teams won their respective State Water Polo Championships. The girls won with a final score of 9-6, the boys’ game was tight but the Knights got away with the 5-4 win.
7. Girls Wrestling
- As of July 1, 2023, Girls’ Wrestling was officially announced as a PIAA sport at the high school level. This did not come easy however as there is a 100 school threshold for the PIAA to vote on sponsoring girls wrestling. But thanks to coaches and administrators statewide, Girl’s Wrestling is officially sponsored by the PIAA.
8. North Penn Thespians on Good Morning America
- One public school in every state got the license this year to reenact the Disney film “Frozen” as a musical, and North Penn High School won the contest. All seven shows sold out in a record two days after release. Along with that, our thespians were featured on Good Morning America for a choreographic showing of Frozen.
9. School Board Election, School Board Candidates Forum
- For the first time in a couple of years, The Knight Crier hosted the School Board Candidates Forum, eight candidates took the stage and addressed three major issues the district faces: renovation plans/voter referendum, curriculum policy, and school safety. The Democrats saw a clean sweep of the five open spots with candidates Elisha Gee, Timothy Macbain, Julianne Ramic, Cathy Wesley, and Kunbi Rudnick.
10. NHS Coffee Stand
- As of the 2022-23 school year, North Penn’s National Honor Society (NHS) has decided to run a morning Coffee Stand at the high school to fundraise for various school events. Not only does the Coffee Stand serve as a fundraiser, but it is also an opportunity for NHS members to get volunteer hours.
