TOWAMENCIN – On a cold November Monday night the North Penn Student Government Association held their annual Powderpuff event at Crawford Stadium. Powderpuff is a tradition here at North Penn between the three grades who are each represented by a football team and cheerleading squad. The girls play flag football and are coached by their own classmates on the Knights football team whereas the boys are responsible for providing a halftime routine choreographed by the North Penn dance team members and cheerleaders.
With a 6:30 kickoff the first game commenced with the sophomores taking on the juniors to see who would play the seniors for the championship game. Aided by juniors Allison King, Devan Graf, and Rebecca Christoffers, the juniors had a 20-14 lead over the sophomores going into halftime. Then the awaiting fans in the stands were treated with performances by the sophomore and junior cheer squads.
After halftime the seesaw battle continued between the two teams but in the end the sophomores were able to pull the upset winning 27-26 due to contributions by Sydnee Towns, Kristina Miller, Allison Williams, and Christina Auriemma.
Before starting the championship game with the seniors versus the sophomores, the Inter Club Council presented Powderpuff King and Queen. SGA President Pat Zancolli was crowned king as he raised $100, and Thespian President Becca Rosenblatt was crowned as she collected $313.52.
As the temperatures continued to drop, the game between the seniors and sophomores began and the first half concluded with a 14-0 lead for the seniors.
The senior cheerleaders then performed their highly anticipated halftime routine atributed to Miley Cyrus, including songs from her Hannah Montana days such as the “Best of Both Worlds” and “East Northumberland High” to her new hits such as “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball.”
Senior cheerleader Ricky Hollenbach explained that he first became a cheerleader sophomore year and his favorite part was “doing the actual routine itself, it was so much fun.”
Once the field was cleared from their performance, the game resumed and the seniors proved themselves worthy with a 21–6 win over the sophomores highlighted with plays by seniors Nikki Hessler, Kara Imes, Katrina Marger, Devon Kelly, and Rachel Grace.
Reflecting the attitude of many of the Powderpuff participates, senior Victoria Christensen commented “it was so fun; it was a thrill and it was great to be out there playing with my friends.”
During the senior’s celebration of their victory the juniors were given the sportsmanship award while the seniors were awarded the best cheer routine.
Whether out on the field or bundled up in the stands, Powderpuff was a fun event for all who attended.
