The National Honor Society is a prestigious club that gets over 200 applicants per year. The Honor Society accepts only the brightest, most outgoing leaders of the North Penn community.
“We are a nationally recognized organization which promotes scholarships, leadership and community service. It shows colleges and the community that you are a person that is willing to help, not only to make yourself better but to make the community around you better as well,” started NHS advisor Michelle Machado.
Machado has been the NHS advisor for 3 years along with co-advisor Alexis Parrish who has been involved for 2 years. NHS focuses on selflessness, academic excellence as they promote charitable acts of kindness from their members.
“I really like working with go-getter kids, kids that always look for ways to help out, things to do. I have lots of kids that come up to me with different service projects that they like to do and try to start up with kids their own age. So it’s really nice to work with such a great group of kids all the time,” continued Machado.
Annually NHS holds multiple events that portions of the proceeds go to various charities located around the North Penn community. Every year they host the “Mr. North Penn” pageant which the entire school gets an opportunity to get involved with. All of the proceeds then go to a local charity of the contestant’s choice. NHS is also actively involved in the For Pete’s Sake Walk; focused on fundraising for terminal cancer patients. The walk is located at Citizens Bank Park and usually takes place in the spring, NHS has over one hundred members that go and assist in multiple ways.
“We are a great organization, community service based, and focused on getting involved and giving back to the community specifically. It just feels great to be able to say you are actively involved in giving back to the community as well as the school. We do so much that’s exciting that the whole school can get involved and do things for others and not just ourselves,” concluded NHS President Victoria Christensen.
