PHILADELPHIA-On Monday, March 20th, North Penn’s French 4 and French 5 AP students traveled to the Philadelphia Art Museum to observe the Van Gogh up Close exhibit.
The sunny spring weather provided the perfect back drop for a day trip to the city. Before entering the museum, students had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful day and to take photos on the art museum steps and in front of the Rocky statue. Many students had a good time joking around with an enthusiastic Rocky impersonator running up the museum steps.
The exhibit itself was equally as compelling. Students had the chance to get within inches of world class Van Gogh paintings such as “Rain” and “Blades of Grass.” Many students found it interesting to see the real Van Gogh sunflower paintings that nearly every elementary art class uses for inspiration at one point or another. The museum guides had an abundance of fascinating historical facts to share about Van Gogh’s life and his life’s work.
“I don’t usually like museums, but this exhibit was interesting and intriguing. The paintings almost told a story,” said Kimmy Faughey, a French 4 student.
Upon arrival back at North Penn, students were welcomed by the appetizing aromas of a Mediterranean lunch catered by The Oasis restaurant in Lansdale. Students had a unique opportunity to try a distinct culture’s cuisine. Falafel, stuffed grape leaves, Greek salad, and Baklava were among the choices offered.
“I think it was a great experience,” said junior Kavit Solanki. I had a lot of fun and learned a bunch of interesting things. The paintings spoke to me and were very inspiring. Van Gogh seemed like a pretty chill dude. It was a trip to remember and being with ‘mes amis’ just made it better.”
The combination of world class art and a delicious lunch provided a two-tier success and garnered great feedback from all involved. Even for those who dislike art or prefer the comfort of American cuisine, it was still an enjoyable day to celebrate diversity and spend time with classmates.
