Volpe hunts down Bucks with 14 Strikeouts

Game 2 of the North Penn Lady Knights’ season mimicked Game 1 in a very familiar way. Senior Mady Volpe was on the mound, and the opposition had no answer. A 5 inning complete game by Volpe helped the Knights start out the year with consecutive wins, getting the win over CB West 11-0. Volpe did receive help on the offensive side, as Sophomore Brie Wilmot had a solo shot to spark a 7 run second inning for the Lady Knights.

“We were very good today at the plate choosing their pitch,” coach Rick Torresani said. “They didn’t overreact to a pitch and just went up there and knew what to do.”

The 1st inning set the tone for the Lady Knights, as Volpe was able to retire the side in order with her first two strikeouts as well. The bottom half had North Penn drive in two runs off the bats of Sophomores Sara Sabocsik and Anabelle Smink.

Second inning defensively was much the same, as Volpe struck out the side with a walk after the first batter. The Lady Knights showed a flare of energy and it translated as Wilmot homered over the center field fence on a full count. Senior Rachel Lowry followed up two batters later with an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-0. After a walk, Sabocsik once again delivered this time with a two run double. Volpe was able to help her own cause with a sac fly to deep center. An RBI single by Wilmot, in her second at bat of the inning, made it 8-0 in favor of North Penn. A grounder up past the first base bag by Freshman Gianna Cimino scored North Penn’s 7th run of the frame and capped off the second inning.

“Offense is very important as well for us,” Volpe said. “We knew we had to drive the ball and it resulted in us scoring a lot.”

After sitting for a while, Volpe looked like she had not missed a beat. She struck out the side in order for her 6th, 7th, and 8th strikeouts of the game. A leadoff double by Sophomore Julia Shearer allowed her to get into scoring position and Junior Liz Stark drove her in with a single.

CB West managed to get their first hit of the ball game with the leadoff hitter to start the 4th. Volpe was able to strike out the next three batters to get out of the inning. North Penn had their first and only scoreless inning in the bottom of the 4th. Volpe once again stepped back onto the mound and sat down the hitters as quick as they could come up. Striking out all three to end the game (via mercy) in the 5th. Volpe ended the game with a line of 5IP, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, and 14Ks.

“It’s consistency, the ability to have every one of her pitches be on,” Torresani said. “The rise ball was working and that’s just Mady being Mady. I tell everyone that Mady is Mady, and that’s what she does.”

The Lady Knights look to continue their winning ways on Friday at Pennridge. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
