Ultimate Frisbee bound for states
TOWAMENCIN- “The underdog mentality,” is the mojo North Penn’s Ultimate Frisbee team is rolling into the 2019 State Tournament with as they prepare for their 7th consecutive state championship run. Being held in Pittsburgh, PA, the coaches and players have circled their calendars for Memorial day weekend, the days that will determine the story of the 2019 North Penn Ultimate Frisbee team. Building off of a very successful run in “Cities,” (the City tournament), the frisbee squad locked in for their qualification for the state tournament in their last seeding game and are feeling the hype of a championship run with a team filled with chemistry and high hopes for their upcoming state championship journey.
“We have a strong group of seniors, but not too many of them. Our junior class however is really deep and they are all really good friends together. They have a lot of fun as a team and you can see that on and off the field. Even though we have a nine and twelve record overall, we did so well in cities that we feel we are coming in strong and with the strong team chemistry, I think we can get there,” explained North Penn’s head coach, Steve Wherry.
Ranking as the 4th team out of 8 total teams advancing to states out of the Philadelphia area, North Penn is looking forward to not only the competition against top teams in the state, but the overall experience that comes with it.
“We have played a lot of close games and we just have worked hard and come together as a team. I’m looking forward to playing in the state tournament and we are all working toward winning a couple games and see how far we can make it. We work better under pressure, that’s all I gotta say about that,” stated junior and team cutter, Nicholas Coyle.
A rough start to the season and a slow start in the City tournament all are in the past and haven’t defined the team. With an opportunity to make their mark in school history and chemistry that is almost unbreakable from top to bottom of the varsity roster, the Ultimate Frisbee squad is looking to push to the top of their play in the biggest part of the season.
“I’m just looking forward to having a great time, as a senior, it’s my last chance to do something big and as a team we are just looking to make a big run and prove ourselves to North Penn and leave it all out on the field. We all know our strengths and weaknesses and I feel that our chemistry and hard work all season will push us harder and step up to the momentum that we need for a strong state run,” said senior and team cutter, Drew Massack.
The North Penn Ultimate Frisbee team is out at Pennsbury this weekend, May 11th and 12th, for a tournament, serving as a precursor to the state tournament. Memorial day weekend is where all of the team’s hard work and dedication will look to pay off out in Pittsburgh, PA.
