Knights dominate the Indians
October 15, 2016
TOWAMENCIN- Besides the crisp temperatures, the North Penn Knights football team had going for them on Friday night. Being both senior and breast cancer awareness night, the Knights also had a great crowd came out to support them. And, of course, having a record of 7-0 didn’t hurt their confidence either.
Comparing North Penn’s stats coming into the game to Souderton’s, one would instantly say that the Knights are clearly the better team. However, Souderton hung with the Knights in the early going.
The Knights took their time to turn on the heat that has been seen in past weeks. Reece Udinski took until 6:34 in the first quarter to connect an impressive 35 yard pass to Justis Henley for the first touchdown of the game.
Even then, the Knights still seemed to be in a little bit of a haze as they took two flags, 2 and 4 minutes after this touchdown for an offside and a false start call.
From there, a switch flipped and North Penn started to dominate the Indians. With 2:22 left on the clock in the first quarter, Nick Dillon scored the second touchdown of the night. Then, Udinski connected with Owen Thomas in the end zone for a third with only ten seconds left in the quarter.
The Knights kept this momentum going into the second quarter with an interception into a touchdown by Owen Thomas (6:20).
North Penn dug in and capitalized on Souderton running back Koby Khan’s fumble with Jon Haynes, collecting and sprinting the pigskin all the way down for yet another touchdown (1:25).
Haynes would have gained North Penn another point, after an interception and return, but a flag on the play canceled his tremendous efforts. Six seconds later, the play was redeemed by Dillon with the Knight’s 5th touchdown, officially putting in effect the mercy rule.
The mercy rule constitutes a running clock for the rest of the game.
At the end of the 3rd quarter, another touchdown was made by Anthony Andrews, putting North Penn at 48 to 0 at nearly the end of the quarter.
Coach Beck, used this lead as an opportunity to give the lower classmen time and experience on the field. Allowing room for Souderton to force a touchdown with 2:23 left in the third. In addition, to another Souderton touchdown with 5:21 in the fourth.
“I think it was a very efficient offensive night. I think we did a lot of good things offensively and we were opportunistic on defense” said Coach Beck.
North Penn (8-0) looks to continue their winning streak next week against William Tennent (0-8) in Warminster.
“It went pretty good, our defense played great. They kind of took over the whole game and it boosted the confidence of our defense. Which I think we needed to show the media what a powerhouse we are on defense” said wide receiver Ricky Johns.
