2009 NPHS grad Brandon McManus ready to kick in 50th Super Bowl
TOWAMENCIN – Over the years, dedicated student athletes and talented coaches have turned North Penn High School sports into a District One juggernaut in many sports. Recently, 12 North Penn student athletes signed their letters of intent as the latest batch to continue playing sports at the collegiate level. Once in a long while, however, a special athlete comes along who is able to take his or her talents to the next level.
For North Penn graduate Brandon McManus, his talent and hard work has landed him the opportunity of a lifetime: to play in the Super Bowl.
McManus was a 2009 North Penn graduate and the kicker for the football team. After graduation, he attended Temple University and continued kicking for the Owls. Upon his graduation in 2013, McManus was selected in the draft by the Colts before being traded to the Giants and finally to the Broncos.
Over the last two seasons McManus has earned the starting kicking job for the Denver Broncos – the same Broncos who this Sunday will take on the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl. In honor of the success of their prodigal child, North Penn has dubbed Friday, February 5th as Brandon McManus Day throughout the district.
“All of the support definitely means a lot to me,” said McManus in a phone interview this week. “It’s pretty empowering.”
Last week the Student Government Association sold 1,300 specially made Brandon McManus T-Shirts in order for the students to be able to wear their support on their sleeve.
“(McManus’) success means a great deal to not only the school and the Athletic Department, but also to the community as a whole,” said Athletic Director Bill Bartle. “He serves to show kids that if you work hard and chase your dreams, anything is possible.”
“I would just like to thank the North Penn community for all of their support, I know it will definitely travel with me to Santa Clara” added McManus.
Tune into CBS on Sunday at 6:30 to watch McManus and the Broncos take on the Panthers for the Super Bowl title.
