Balanced attack leads Knights past Spartans
October 13, 2015
TOWAMENCIN – Parents and fellow players occupied the bleachers of the Rick Carroll Natatorium as the Knights varsity water polo team (9-1) defeated the Springfield Township Spartans 10-3 last night.
In the first quarter, the Knights were treading water with only one goal on the board and the Spartans leading 2-1.
By the next quarter, North Penn began to get their feet wet and showed their dominance over their opponent. Senior Harrison Friel, made a ferocious throw to score the first goal of the second quarter. Followed by a steal made by junior Nico Kountroubis to assist sophomore Derek Friday in scoring the next goal. Senior Mike Sisko, concluded this streak of goals, making the score 5-2 by the end of the second.
Despite many attempts, the Spartans were unable to score thanks to goalie and senior Gavin Hennessey. Hennessey made a multitude of saves in the second quarter, ultimately helping his teammates sink Springfield.
“It all sort of falls around the defense and it’s a nice group of guys that I’m surrounded by so I feel confident. I just try and say everything that comes to my mind. Even if it doesn’t mean anything to them, I’ll just say it just to try and stay as one team,” mentioned Hennessey.
The Knights continued to flush the Spartans in the third quarter with three additional goals scored by junior Shane Markus, freshman AJ Patterson, and junior Nico Kountroubis.
The game finally ended when sophomore Derek Friday and Kountroubis drowned the Spartans, scoring two goals and making the score 10-3.
“We played great as a team. We started off slow but towards the end we started playing better together, [making] better passes [and] better shots and we came out on top,” said Kountroubis, last night’s leading scorer.
The Knights varsity water polo team will be away in action, again on October 20th as they take on Souderton.
