TOWAMENCIN – With a strong student section and a buzz in the air both the boys and girls North Penn Water polo teams set out with the mindset for two victories over conference rivals Souderton Thursday night.
GIRLS WATER POLO
With a clock counting down the final minute of the first half of overtime North Penn’s very own Kelly Fellmeth received a pass from Leah Brown and shot a goal that would end up being the winning goal in North Penn’s 3-2 overtime victory over Souderton.
“Everybody knew what to do, everybody had their head in the game – it was really just about applying what we had learned in practice,” started senior Kelly Fellmeth on the Maiden’s performance against the Indians.
A strong defense lead by senior goalie Kat Perkins with 15 saves was key to North Penn’s victory.
“We know Souderton has very good outside shooters so we know to press up top and try not to foul outside the 5,” continued Fellmeth.
The Indians tied the game with 4 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter sending the game into overtime.
“Once overtime hit we were really pumped up to win this game,” stated Fellmeth.
Describing the winning goal Fellmeth stated “my teammate [Leah] gave me a great pass which allowed me to be able to shoot the ball.”
On how big this win was for them Kelly concluded “it’s big – we only have three weeks left until states and we try our best to go out there and show other teams what North Penn is made of.”
BOYS WATER POLO
Following the exciting girl’s overtime victory, the boy’s water polo team got off to a strong start scoring 8 goals in the first half that eventually would turn into 13 with goals from Brett Else, Kyle Supko, Mike Gallo, Skylar Trautz, Thomas Kountroubis, and Cole Palumbo as the Knights defeated Souderton 13-9.
Approaching tonight’s rival game against Souderton, North Penn boys’ water polo head coach Jason Grubb said that the team was focusing on “trying to clean up our game a little bit, making sure we are passing correctly and are nice and safe with our ball movement. Our guys really showed today that they cleaned up the passing…the last time we played these guys it was a close game and it was nice to see some separation [tonight].”
Junior Skylar Trautz agreed continuing “we have been playing a lot better since our first game and have been improving every day [in practice].”
Senior goalie Jon Krail was able to hold off a strong Souderton offense with over 10 saves in the back.
When asked how the team was coming together mentally Grubb said that “the guys are really starting to come together. We played a couple of close games in the beginning of the year and now we are getting into the heart of the season and we are focusing.”
“Our next big game is against North Allegheny, they are the only team we have lost to this year so we are really focusing on taking them down next,” finished Skylar.
