TOWAMENCIN – Jumping to their feet, the crowd went wild as junior Kevin McKenna of the North Penn Knights scored the game-winning goal in the last minute of play against Quakertown Panthers on Wednesday afternoon, sending the Knights to a perfect 6-0 start to the season.
North Penn dominated play at the start of the first half, but for much of Wednesday’s contest, the Panthers and Knights battled evenly and euqally had trouble finding the back of the net. Quakertown goalie, senior Matt Overholtzer, did not make it easy on the Knights. After catching numerous shots sent straight at him, Overholtzer extended to block a power shot with the tips of his fingers at the start of the second half.
After multiple shots on goal by senior Dylan McMahon and junior Brad Deckel throughout the game, the Knights set up a long pass across the field to end up in McMahon’s possession, who crossed it into McKenna to send it to the back of the net.
“It feels great,” said McKenna. “It’s my first goal this season…to score a goal against our conference rivals is awesome.”
Tim Langton, senior captain, commented “It was a really hard-won game… the best we’ve played all year.”
Assistant coach, Chris DePeppe, filling in for Paul Duddy, was equally pleased with the Knights 1-0 win. “They came out and played hard from the start… we’re happy to leave here with a victory.”
The Knights take on the Hatboro-Horsham Hatters in an away game on Friday at 3:30, in the hopes of continuing their undefeated record.
