TOWAMENCIN- Sweltering under the hot sun, North Penn men’s soccer opened their conference season against the rival Souderton Indians in a tightly contested, fast-paced game the ended in a 2-1 Knights victory on Tuesday afternoon.
The game started off with a bang with a quick header into the opposing goal by North Penn’s Dylan McMahon within the first ten minutes. Following the goal, both teams amped up their offensive attacks, only to be turned around by the equally deft defenders. It evolved into a physical game as Injuries abounded from clustered headers and wild elbows, bringing Nick Miller and Drew McMenamin from North Penn and Chadd Ziegler of Souderton down to the ground to recover from knocks to the head.
North Penn lead 1-0 for the majority of the game, until Big Red’s Nick Stulb scored a game-changing goal to knot the game at 1-1.
In the tense final minute of the game, red and white battled it out directly in front of the Souderton goal. Struggling in the mass of players, Tyler Johnston of North Penn connected with the ball to score the game winning goal.
“It was pretty awesome… we won the game and that was what it was all meant for,” said Johnston.
“Playing at Souderton is always a tough one, but we pulled it out today. We have momentum going into the game against CB South this Thursday,” added McMahon, one of the Knights 2014 captains.
Commenting on the game and the player’s performance, coach Paul Duddy noted that the Knights need to “try to play smarter” but “we’ll move on to Thursday’s game, I’m sure they’ll do the same.”
A confident and improving team, North Penn men’s soccer will take on Central Bucks South this Thursday in the hopes of continuing their winning momentum.
