TOWAMENCIN-With bated breath, the crowd in the North Penn gymnasium watched as senior Lauren Crisler took to the free throw line, one point away from North Penn history – 1,000 points. Crisler dribbled the ball, squatted down and released it, floating in the air for what seem like an eternity. As the ball swished through the net, Crisler was greeted with hugs by her teammates and fans. The refs would call an official timeout so that the Thousand-Pointer could receive the game ball from her coach, and be presented with flowers by North Penn’s Athletic Directors.
This momentous moment would be sealed by a North Penn win, 44-29 over conference rivals Central Bucks South. Crisler set the tempo early with a deep two pointer for the first basket of the night. From there, North Penn took control, shooting very well and finishing the first quarter with 16 – 8 lead over the Titans. Going into halftime, Crisler was 3 points away from 1,000, while the Lady Knight’s held a 5 point lead, 21 – 16, lead at half.
All eyes were on Crisler as she took the court after intermission. With 5:22 left in the quarter, Tumasz missed a contested layup, only to have fellow team captain, Crisler there for the putback, making her only two points away from 1K.
The student section was ecstatic at this point, creating an electric feel in the North Penn Gymnasium. At 3:52 in the 3rd quarter, Crisler wove in between two South defenders, to lay in her 998th and 999th points, and was fouled on the way in. As she took to the line Crisler said she “was nervous at first” but “knew [she] had two shots to get the point.”
After she sunk her free throw the elated North Penn crowd cheered “LC, North Penn!” Crisler joins an elite squad of 1,000 point scorers, the 11th between both boys and girls since 1992. This is the second year in a row the Lady The Lady Knights used this momentum to finish the game reaching their 7th league win this season (13-2, 7-1). The Titans fall to 10-6 (4-4 in conference play). North Penn will look to improve upon their conference record when they take on the CB East Patriots on Friday the 25th.
