The season may not have been perfect, but the senior night was certainly a night to remember. It is a tradition for girls soccer senior night to have a theme, and this year it was a women’s national soccer team and appropriately the girls played up to the theme.
The night began with the singing of the national anthem lead by an enthusiastic North Penn student section before Megan Gerhart, Katie Huber, Katie Johnson, Lizzy Kohler, Haley Mangiaruga, Katie Miller, Danielle Prestifilippo and Elizabeth Ricci partook in their final home soccer games for their North Penn careers.
Lizzy Kohler, who was unable to play this season because of an unfortunate ACL tear, began the game with the opening tap off. The game was locked at 0-0 through 2 regulations halves and 1 full over time period
With 3:11 left on the game clock in double overtime, Senior Haley Mangiaruga scored the game winning goal that sent the team and crowd into frenzy.
“It felt amazing, especially since it was my senior night, I was just in shock, but it was a team effort and we all played well together, and that’s how I was able to make that shot”, said Mangiaruga.
The entire team was in a state of mixed emotions.
“When we practice together and we’re together we’re just a family and just going off to college… I’m going to miss everyone and the closeness we had,” said a teary eyed Katie Miller.
“It feels really good when you work hard the whole game and it comes down to the last few minutes and you rally and win it feels pretty good, the amount of hours we spend together I’m really going to miss these girls,” said goalie Megan Gerhart who is credited in conjunction with a strong defense for the shut out.
“It’s pretty sad that this is one of the last games that I will be playing with these girls.
“I’m going to miss all the great moments with these girls” said an emotional Katie Huber. “My most memorable moment is tonight.”
Although the girls fell short of playoffs, they remained positive and held each other in their hearts as they took the field for one of the last times they will ever play together.
