TOWAMENCIN – All good things must come to an end, and on Friday night North Penn’s four year, thirty game unbeaten streak in Continental Conference games came to a tough end as North Penn lost to C.B. South 36 – 29. The toughest part was that North Penn held a commanding 23-7 lead at halftime and had shut down highly touted Titan running back Josh Adams and quarterback John Pileggi. During the first half, North Penn controlled the ball and scored at will with first half touchdowns by Kris Akins, Kyle Mayfield and George Shipp and a field goal by Brandon Mandes. C.B. South’s lone score came on a 92 yard kickoff return by Josh Adams.
The end of the halftime homecoming ceremonies also signaled the end of North Penn’s dominance. Having stopped the Knights on the first drive of the second half, the Titans proceeded to open up an aerial assault connecting on multiple passes that had the Knights on their heels. North Penn did not have an answer for Pileggi and South’s passing game and by the end of the third quarter the Titans were back in the game, trailaing 23-21.
“When you are stopping the run you gotta be able to stop the pass, too,” noted North Penn Head coach, Dick Beck.
North Penn steadied itself with a fourth quarter touchdown by Gozur but missed the extra point to make it 29-21. The Titans on the next possession drove the ball down the field for a TD and 2 point conversion to tie the game at 29. On the next series, the Knights were stopped and the Titans got the ball with less than 3 minutes remaining. They continued completing passes at will and scored on a crossing pattern to end the game and silenced the North Penn stands.
“They made one more play than us, and that was the touchdown,” Beck said after the game.
Although the streak was not on Coach Beck’s mind, it was on the players as Steve Gozur remarked after the game.
“It hurts, we have let down all of those teams before us by losing and ending the streak.”
The Knights will look to restart the streak as they host Hatboro-Horsham next Friday night at Crawford Stadium in the Tackle for the Cure Game.
