North Penn jumped on the struggling Quakertown defense the instant the clock started. A mere 19 seconds in, Mayfield made it look easy as he ran 70 yards for a touch down on only the second offensive drive of the night.
“It was a simple toss to the outside,” said Mayfield. “The offensive line (sophomore Frank Tranzilli, senior Joe Potkovac, senior George Shipp, senior Chris Zanoni, senior Trevor Price, and senior Derek Brandt) did a great job keeping everyone inside, so I just ran down the sideline.”
The Knights decided to once again go with the dual quarterback approach splitting the playing time between junior Austin Shearer and senior Mike Berstecher, and it was equally as successful as in last week’s contest against CB East.
“I think it’s working pretty well,” said head coach Dick Beck of the 2-quarterback strategy. “But we’ll see next week with a big game against South. We’re excited.”
In the second quarter, Berstecher’s 8-yard touchdown pass to senior Colton Pyne escalated North Penn’s lead to 35-0. The Knight’s compounded the score one final time to 42-0 thanks to a 7-yard touchdown run by senior Chris McGinnis.
The Panthers lone scoring opportunity came in the third quarter when senior Keegan Williamson ran 18 yards for a touchdown. Besides that, it was a very strong defensive showing from North Penn as well.
“If our defense can do that every game,” joked Beck, “then we’ll be in pretty good shape.”
The mercy rule, which initiates a continuous clock with no stoppage, went into effect during the second quarter and opened up an opportunity for many of the younger North Penn players to see playing time.
Mayfield described their dominating performance as a definite “confidence booster ” as they move onward from a shaky 1-2 start to the season.
“It was just good to out here and work hard, so I was happy with that,” Beck stated.
The Knights will be back in action 7:30 this Friday night October 5th at North Penn’s annual homecoming celebration as the squad seeks to improve their season’s record to 3-0 in the league (3-2 overall). This game is crucial, because according to Beck, “whoever wins will be in the driver’s seat in the league.”
