TOWAMENCIN – Following the Beast of the East tournament this past weekend, the Maidens water polo team knew they had to crank out a big win over Wissahickon High School Monday afternoon, and they did exactly that. The girls tidal waved over Wissahickon, putting an 8-0 win in the books.
The match started off close as the first quarter held only a steal or two by the Maidens offense and ended with a deadlock score of 0-0.
The girls took a short intermission between quarters and came in with a bang to start the second quarter. About a minute and a half into the quarter, captain Jenn Halcovage made a pass to Brittney Patterson to put North Penn up 1-0 early in the quarter. Just one minute later, the Maidens went in for another shot that was rebounded and won back, only to be shot again by Aspen Trautz to give North Penn a 2-0 lead. The Maidens continued to fire shots at Wissahickon leading up to half time. At half time, North Penn led 7-0 with shots scored by Halcovage, Trautz, B Patterson, Erin O’Neill, and Molly Flannery.
“We worked well together and got the ball where we wanted” commented senior Tess O’Neill.
North Penn continued to dominate the game as the teams came into the third quarter. Wissahickon took a few shots on North Penn, but junior Kat Perkins kept the ball out of the net to keep the Maidens on top. The match continued through the third quarter and North Penn scored another goal with two minutes to spare. The whistle blew and North Penn held an 8-0 lead.
The game wound down in the final quarter, with just a few shots fired by both teams. Wissahickon was close to scoring but freshman Savannah Friday along with assistance from Jen Yacovelli swept the ball out of the net to secure North Penn a solid 8-0 win.
The team was satisfied with their win, but always works to improve for the next game. Captain Tess O’Neill noted some possible improvements for the remainder of the season.
“We need to come together more as a team and focus a little more. We tend to not focus as best as we can but when we do we’re pretty dead on.”
North Penn hopes to carry their success into their next game this Thursday versus Upper Marion. The team also hosts the Knights Invitational this weekend aspiring for success then as well.
