UPPER GWYNEDD- Wins are always big for any type of team. But when a win comes in front of a large crowd on your senior night on the last game of the regular season, it has a special feel to it.
In a dual senior night against Lansdale Catholic at Hostelly Field, The North Penn Knights baseball team took care of business topping the Crusaders 9-3.
The Knights (15-5) got things going in the first with an RBI double from junior Eddie Posavec which was followed by another RBI double from junior Brady West. Steve Cameron set the tone in the bottom half of the lineup by roping two doubles out of the DH position. The Knights never looked back and never relinquished that lead en route to the victory.
Senior Alec Lashkevich got the start and pitched strong as he allowed just one run in two innings of work while striking out three. Junior Brian Maher came in for Lashkevich in the third and also had a solid outing, only allowing two runs and striking out two in three innings on the mound. Hard throwing senior Bobby Reddick came in the game to close and struck out four out of the six batters he faced.
While it always feels good to beat a rival such as Lansdale Catholic, the fact that the win came on senior night in a packed house only added to the elation of the players and coaches. The team also knows that this time next year, they will be without twelve integral members of the team.
“It’s kind of hard to think about [playing my last few games for North Penn],” said senior Chris Boroch. “The season is coming to end and it’s very sad. It’s great to see the guys get together on senior night.”
Boroch had missed most of the season with a broken wrist he suffered in a scrimmage right before the start of the regular season. He is especially grateful he got to play some final games at North Penn before he moved on.
“[Breaking my wrist] was very disappointing,” said Boroch. “It was rough to go through, but games like this make it all better. It’s so exciting [being able to play these last few games]. I love playing.”
Reddick is especially thankful for the great times he has had with his teammates and friends.
“It’s been a great opportunity to play for North Penn,” said Reddick. “I’m going to miss all my teammates here. I’m hoping to take away all the great times I had with them and the coaches, especially coach Manero.”
As the season winds down, head coach Kevin Manero wants to make sure the team stays focused on the current task of advancing as far as they possibly can in the postseason.
“My advice to them is to keep the season going as long as they can because we still have a lot of games left.”
Senior Night may have marked the end of the regular season for the Knights, but the most important part of the season is only beginning, as the District 1 tournament gets underway. The Knights will begin their postseason run when they travel to Marple Newtown Monday afternoon at 4pm in a single elimination opening round.
