TOWAMENCIN- Memories are created from special moments. With one swing of the bat, a lasting memory was made that the girls softball team will never forget.
In walk-off fashion, the Maidens (7-4 in the conference) defeated the Souderton Indians 10- 9 yesterday on North Penn’s senior day.
It looked bad for North Penn, as they trailed 9-0 heading into their half of the fifth. Nearly being forced into a mercy rule, the Maidens maintained their composure and finally scored in the fifth on freshman Becky Christoffers’ one run single. The next runs came from an RBI single by senior Jess Mower and a two run double from Michelle Holweger.
The team went into the bottom of the seventh still trailing by five runs. But they kept up with the momentum and after some key walks and hits, found themselves only down by two runs. With two runners on base, junior Alexa Gable stepped up to the plate. On just the second pitch of the at bat, she hit a long fly ball to left field. With the wind blowing and the crowd holding their breaths, the ball just made it over the fence for a three run walk-off homerun.
“It was so exciting [to hit the homerun],” said Gable following the game. “The first pitch was pretty high where I did not think I could get it. The second pitch was right down the middle and I got a hold of it.”
What made this game even more special was the fact that it was senior night, in which seniors Mower and Laura Hess were honored prior to first pitch. Both seniors were big factors into the dramatic comeback. Mower’s RBI was the start of the comeback and Hess, who came in relief in the fouth inning, pitched 3.1 shutout innings that kept the team in the game.
“I was a little worried, but they hung in there with us and we got it done,” said Mower.
Gable, a junior, was also very grateful to know she helped win the game for the seniors.
“Its so great [to win on senior night],” said Gable. “We were really getting down on ourselves in the beginning innings. We got our confidence back when we started scoring and we pulled it out for our seniors.”
After spending the past few years on the team, Mower and Hess have created some special moments and are hoping to take a great deal of life lessons away from their experience.
“Learning how to work hard as a team [is what I can take away from my time here],” said Hess.
“I want to take away friendship because I love everyone on the team,” added Mower.
The Maidens will look to finish out the regular season on a high note when they travel to Hatboro-Horsham on Monday.
